And from the exertion of lungs in one way to a somewhat different form of lung exertion – Opera with a twist – dine at Bel Canto in the City of London and be serenaded by budding opera singers throughout the evening

OPERA DINNERS

PARIS and LONDON

This London venue combines opera and fine
dining with an elegant twist. The waiting staff are talented
young opera stars of the future. At regular intervals
during the evening, up to four performers belt out opera
classics while moving between tables.

Every 15 minutes
without fail, the restaurant stops and the Puccini
begins; they perform a varied programme of popular
opera arias; even those unfamiliar with Opera will find
themselves humming along with the singers!

Bel Canto London was launched in 2008 in the heart
of the City and pairs French cuisine with flamboyant,
theatrical entertainment. The owner exported the idea
from his two successful Paris venues to tap into the high
quality of musical talent being nurtured in London.

All performers are trained opera singers and pianists,

specializing in classical opera.

As Wendy Miller of the Daily Telegraph says –

‘One minute, your waitress is putting warm crab gâteau in front of you, the next, she's strutting around the tables belting out La Habanera, from Bizet's Carmen, or joining in the festive, drinking-song quartet from La Traviata, with three of her colleagues.’

For more information – how to book – listen to the opera – go to:

http://www.lebelcanto.com/

Joke Corner – us blondes do get problems !!

BLONDE ON A PLANE

A PLANE IS ON ITS WAY TO TORONTO, WHEN A BLONDE IN

ECONOMY CLASS GETS UP, AND MOVES TO THE FIRST CLASS

SECTION AND SITS DOWN.

THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT WATCHES HER DO THIS, AND ASKS

TO SEE HER TICKET.

SHE THEN TELLS THE BLONDE THAT SHE PAID FOR ECONOMY

CLASS, AND THAT SHE WILL HAVE TO SIT IN THE BACK.

THE BLONDE REPLIES, "I'M BLONDE, I'M BEAUTIFUL, I'M

GOING TO TORONTO AND I'M STAYING RIGHT HERE."

THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT GOES INTO THE COCKPIT AND TELLS

THE PILOT AND THE CO-PILOT THAT THERE IS A BLONDE

BIMBO SITTING IN FIRST CLASS, THAT BELONGS IN

ECONOMY, AND WON'T MOVE BACK TO HER SEAT.

THE CO-PILOT GOES BACK TO THE BLONDE AND TRIES TO

EXPLAIN THAT BECAUSE SHE ONLY PAID FOR ECONOMY

SHE WILL HAVE TO LEAVE AND RETURN TO HER SEAT.

THE BLONDE REPLIES, "I'M BLONDE, I'M BEAUTIFUL, I'M

GOING TO TORONTO AND I'M STAYING RIGHT HERE."

THE CO-PILOT TELLS THE PILOT THAT HE PROBABLY SHOULD

HAVE THE POLICE WAITING WHEN THEY LAND TO ARREST

THIS BLONDE WOMAN, WHO WON'T LISTEN TO REASON.

THE PILOT SAYS, "YOU SAY SHE IS A BLONDE? I'LL

HANDLE THIS, I'M MARRIED TO A BLONDE - I SPEAK BLONDE."

HE GOES BACK TO THE BLONDE AND WHISPERS IN HER EAR,

AND SHE SAYS, "OH, I'M SORRY." AND GETS UP AND GOES

BACK TO HER SEAT IN ECONOMY.

THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT AND CO-PILOT ARE AMAZED AND

ASKED HIM WHAT HE SAID TO MAKE HER MOVE WITHOUT

ANY FUSS.

"I TOLD HER, "FIRST CLASS ISN'T GOING TO TORONTO ".

Gosh Really ??????

Boisdale of Belgravia

Boisdale of Belgravia is situated in an elegant Regency town house, just north of Buckingham Palace Road and a short stroll from Victoria. Its bars, restaurants and private dining room are open on weekdays and Saturday evenings and offer a selection of menus to suit every budget. With another restaurant in Bishopsgate and The Lamb at Hindon, Salisbury – Boisdale offers a private membership with an eclectic range of events including live jazz every evening, a cigar club and many unusual dinners with wine, champagne and spirit tastings.

The Boisdale Derby 2009
Saturday 6 June
In association with the Sporting Agenda · Sponsored by Lloyds TSB

Celebrate the great recession in true British style at the nation’s most popular race meeting on 6 June.

Not daunted by economic adversity we are determined to try and ensure that our time-honoured pleasures in life are not compromised. To this end we have devised a new revolutionary, but traditional, format for the day with the objective of squeezing more enjoyment out of the occasion whilst also reducing costs.

In the past we have enjoyed a seated luncheon in the Boisdale Enclosure which involves an enormous amount of staff and precious space. This year we are going to be providing a luxury lobster picnic and an all day Pommery Champagne & Oyster Bar, which we envisage will create a livelier more interactive atmosphere as well as enabling us to significantly lower the costs of the tickets. The cost of the ticket is £195 per person all inclusive. For more information or to reserve places, please contact Zoe on -

Joke Corner – whoever thought of this – brilliant !!
Do read through – especially the Royal Bank of Scotland !!!
21 Economic models explained:

  • SOCIALISM
    You have two cows.
You give one to your neighbour.

  • COMMUNISM
    You have two cows.
The State takes both and gives you some milk.

  • FASCISM
    You have two cows.
The State takes both and sells you some milk.

  • NAZISM
    You have two cows.
The State takes both and shoots you.

  • BUREAUCRATISM
    You have two cows.
The State takes both, shoots one, milks the other, and then throws the milk away.

  • TRADITIONAL CAPITALISM
    You have two cows.
You sell one and buy a bull.
Your herd multiplies, and the economy grows.
You sell them and retire on the income.

  • SURREALISM
    You have two giraffes.
The government requires you to take harmonica lessons.

  • AN AMERICAN CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
You sell one, and force the other to produce the milk of four cows.
Later, you hire a consultant to analyze why the cow has dropped dead.

  • ROYAL BANK OF SCOTLAND VENTURE CAPITALISM
    You have two cows.
You sell three of them to your publicly listed company, using letters of credit opened by your brother-in-law at the bank, then execute a debt/equity swap with an associated general offer so that you get all four cows back, with a tax exemption for five cows. The milk rights of the six cows are transferred via an intermediary to a Cayman Island Company secretly owned by the majority shareholder who sells the rights to all seven cows back to your listed company. The annual report says the company owns eight cows, with an option on one more. You sell one cow to buy a new president of the United States, leaving you with nine cows. No balance sheet is provided with the release. The public then buys your bull.

  • A FRENCH CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
You go on strike, organize a riot, and block the roads, because you want three cows.

  • A JAPANESE CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
You redesign them so they are one-tenth the size of an ordinary cow and produce twenty times the milk.
You then create a clever cow cartoon image called 'Cowkimon' and market it worldwide.

  • A GERMAN CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
You re-engineer them so they live for 100 years, eat once a month, and milk themselves.

  • AN ITALIAN CORPORATION
You have two cows, but you don't know where they are.
    You decide to have lunch.

  • A RUSSIAN CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
You count them and learn you have five cows.
You count them again and learn you have 42 cows.
You count them again and learn you have 2 cows.
You stop counting cows and open another bottle of vodka.

  • A SWISS CORPORATION
    You have 5000 cows.
None of them belong to you.
You charge the owners for storing them.

  • A CHINESE CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
You have 300 people milking them.
You claim that you have full employment, and high bovine productivity.
You arrest the newsman who reported the real situation.

  • AN INDIAN CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
    You worship them.

  • A BRITISH CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
    Both are mad.

  • AN IRAQI CORPORATION
Everyone thinks you have lots of cows.
You tell them that you have none.
No-one believes you, so they bomb the crap out of you and invade your country.
You still have no cows, but at least you are now a Democracy.

  • AN AUSTRALIAN CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
    Business seems pretty good.
You close the office and go for a few beers to celebrate.

  • A NEW ZEALAND CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
The one on the left looks very attractive.

There we have it - the world's economies summed up by a load of cows - although I am not a feminist why isn't it bulls ?? Although of course they are not so versatile and obviously not 'worshipped' in the same way!! Still this is brilliant !!
NB – However we do badly need a bull market.

And finally another day out of central London – visit the picturesque Oaks Park Studios a wonderful location for creativity – and strangely with the Epsom racing connection (Derby Day!!)

Oaks Parks Artists Open Studio Weekend

27th & 28th June 2009
Open 11am – 5pm

The Old Stables, Oaks Park, Croydon Lane,
Sutton SM7 3BA

‘The Studios are an imaginative use of old stables, once part of the estate of the Earl of Derby, who was of historic importance to horse racing at nearby Epsom. They are now occupied by a group of visual artists whose practice includes painting, sculpture, printmaking and puppetry’.

“In Art there is only one thing that counts; the thing you can't explain”
— Georges Braque

Painting, printmaking, sculpture, mixed-media and puppetry – this year’s celebration of our work promises an enjoyable experience of art forms both familiar and new in the beautiful surroundings of Oaks Park, where our unique community of studios is located.

Elly Wright will follow her successful shows in London and France exhibiting colourful French landscapes. Simon Burder will show prints depicting rural Britain. Abstract works by Kate B Hall and Jill Evans will contrast with the figurative concerns of animal sculptor Kendra Haste and paintings inspired by people and places by Susan Absolon.

New to the studios this year are Nick Ladd, who will show recent work and Karin Andrews-Jashapar’s enchanting shadow puppetry. Abbi Torrance, who has exhibited in London and Holland this year will show her meticulous pencil drawings alongside Roger Nell’s photographic prints. Itamar Martinez will show a new series of paintings entitled ‘Las Voces del Silencio’. Nicolette Carter and Kate Wilson are this year’s invited artists.

During the past year artists from Oaks Park Studios have shown their work at ‘Ole’ restaurant in Putney in exhibitions curated by Itamar Martínez. Some of us will again participate in the annual exhibition at Honeywood House in Carshalton, part of Sutton’s ‘Imagine’ arts festival.

Want to get away from the rat race for a few hours – soar across the sky in peace and tranquility but with a sense of exhilaration – why not try Gliding -

Pure Energy - Sheer Excitement !!

"Once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned forever skyward, for there you have been, and there you long to return" Leonardo Da Vinci

Gliding is the ultimate free flying experience. It is a truly diverse sport that can be enjoyed at all levels: from the thriving club scene, to aerobatics, to the international racing competitions, currently dominated by British pilots (with five World Champions).
The gliders you can fly soar using the same air currents that birds use to fly, but have also been designed with the kind of aerodynamic efficiency that enables top speeds of up to 170 mph. Distances of over 600 miles have been covered in one day in the UK and heights of almost 40,000 feet have been achieved. Gliding gives you the freedom to explore the world from a unique birds eye view and discover the many moods of the sky.
What is Gliding?
Gliding is many different things to many different people. For some, it is just a casual hobby, and a way to meet new people. For others, it is an inexpensive way to get airborne. For many, it is even the cutting edge sport of either racing or aerobatics.
For the UK's 77,000 gliding participants though, it is a silent and graceful way of flying without an engine.

Gliders

Gliders come in many shapes and sizes. They can also be cheap or expensive! Fortunately, you don't need to buy your own glider - clubs will generally all have two-seaters for instructional purposes, and most also have single-seaters which you move onto once you are sent solo. If you do buy your own glider, you can keep the cost down by joining a syndicate.

Just Gliding!

Of course, if you take up gliding, you don't have to become a racing or an aerobatic pilot. Many people just enjoy seeing the world from a different viewpoint, or even enjoy the thrill of trying to perfect their basic flying skills. A large number of glider pilots also carry on to become instructors (most instructors are unpaid, but professional nonetheless!) so that they can pass on the skills they have learned.
Gliding is also a sport for all ages - from those who go solo on their 16th birthday through their club cadet schemes; there is no upper age limit.

Back to earth - how about a touch of French farce with Moliere?

The riotous comedy by the 17th Century French playwright Molière turns on its head the classic situation of an older man obsessed with love for his beautiful young ward, whom he has deliberately kept naïve and simple, only to discover that she innocently prefers the attentions of a handsome younger man. Since the gruff guardian, Arnolphe, has kept the girl in seclusion in a house in the country, under the care of a pair of exceptionally stupid servants, misunderstandings and confusions abound in a rumbustious series of mishaps. The Schools For Wives is both a regular crowd-pleaser in France, and is also never off the syllabus in schools, both in its native country and in Britain.

La Confrerie du Sabre d’Or

The Champagne Club That is a cut above all Other Champagne Clubs

Can YOU sabrage ?? OR as known to the cognoscenti - knocking a champagne cork out of a bottle with a Sword (Sabre)?
If you love champagne, have never attempted a sabrage – BUT would love to try – Come and join us -
Firstly – just a little about the Confrerie and the Art of Sabrage –
The Confrérie du Sabre d'Or is devoted to promoting the act of Sabrage and the enjoyment of Champagne. The Heart of the Order is the growing number of Caveaux de Sabrage where Sabrage may be performed. The Caveaux range from small restaurants and Wine Bars to the grandest of Hotels. They all have two things in common - Champagne and fun. This is a wine and far too good to be left only to special occasions.

A programme of events throughout the year held at prestigious venues gives all our members and their guests excellent value for money and plenty of opportunity for Sabrage as well as enjoying excellent Champagne and food.

We welcome the opportunity of introducing you to the Confrérie and the fun of Sabrage.

Art of Sabrage
It can seem daunting when you are initially handed a sabre and a chilled bottle of Champagne with the expectation that you will sever the top of the bottle with the sword’s blade. Do not be downhearted! No-one has ever failed and all it needs is a firm wrist with a high elbow and you’ll be back at your table regaling your fellow guests with tales of how easy it really was.

When performed on a suitably chilled bottle of Champagne, the cork and glass annulus fly away, spilling little of the precious wine. The pressure of the Champagne always ensures that no glass falls back into the bottle. Today, the Maître-Sabreur is always there to make sure safety is observed, and the cork flies away from spectators.

Event Overview
In 2008 the two - way trade between Africa and China reached the target of $100bn, a target which they had set in 2006 when trade was $55bn - This had been reached two years earlier than initially planned. Economists have argued that since 2001, Africa has outperformed global economic growth, and one contributing factor driving this has been the emergence of China as a major trading partner in Africa.
In February 2009, China’s President, Mr. Hu Jintao made a very fruitful tour of Africa including a number of non-oil producing countries and granted $22m (£15m) in aid to Tanzania as he continues his tour of Africa to countries namely Senegal, Mali and Mauritius.
At the IMF meeting in Dar-es-Salaam in March 2009, Yuan Chen, the head of the China Development Bank told the BBC that “he expects investments in the continent by China to continue and China is keen to work with countries on agriculture and infrastructure projects”.
This Event will examine the significance of China’s interest in Africa. Professor Raphael Kaplinsky, Professor of International Development at The Open University will shed some light on the growing economic diverse opportunities for investment in Africa and will address the question of whether the investments are only in few areas such as the oil and gas sector whilst other potential agricultural commodities, which include food crops (such as grains), beverages (such as tea and coffee) are under-invested. China’s keen interest in Africa is accelerating beyond the search for minerals and energy supplies to focusing on agriculture. The extent to which agriculture can better enhanced development in Africa will be examined at the event.
This event will be entirely driven by a greater focus on promoting foreign direct investment flows in Africa. Mr. Zhuangfei Li, Senior Executive, Bank of China, and Dr. Gang Zhang, Manager, Exploration and New Business, China National Offshore Oil Corp, CNOOC Africa (UK) Ltd, will attend the event to give guest speakers' perspectives and an account of China's success stories in regard to investment in Africa. Mr. Youssouph Diallo, Counsellor, Senegal Embassy, UK, will attend the event and speak on trade and investment opportunities in Senegal.
Going Forward >>>> Africa is open for Business.
Journalists including Nik Wood, a correspondent for BBC TV will attend to cover the event. Please use the link below to access Nik Wood’s recent interview with Yuan Chen, head of China Development Bank at the IMF Conference in Dar es Salaam on “China keen to continue Africa investment”).

Joke Corner – A novel way to help solve the UK’s economic crisis –
The absolute best solution to our economic crisis.

There are 25 million British over 45 in the UK. Give each of them £1 million with the following stipulations:

1. You must quit your job. Therefore, 20 million jobs are created.
Unemployment solved !!
However I must just add my ‘two pence worth’ here as I don’t think we would need to have 20 million resignations – with the possibility of 3 million++ unemployed this would have to be done on a selective basis !!!!!
2. You must buy a new car. Therefore, 20 million new cars sold.
Auto industry problem solved !!
Excellent you would not need the £2000 subsidy for older cars !!!! Plus the proviso should be to purchase cars made in the UK not imports !!!! For those with no car spend it on something else !!!
3. You must buy a new house or pay off your mortgage.
Housing industry problem solved !!
Would also create more liquidity in the Banking system and possibly get rid of some of the toxic assets !!!!

For £25 billion we could be out of this mess and on an upward trend again. Much less money than has already been spent with virtually no results and the effects of this "stimulus" package would be felt almost as soon as the cheques went out. I like this idea and I believe this would go a long way to solving the problems, and the bankers and Gordon CLOWN would be surplus to requirements
Would it work ????

From champagne to more champagne and fine wine – join Laithwaites’ celebration of 40 years in business – at a gourmet dinner held in the wonderful environment of Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons

style=Profile of Laithwaites from it's founder - Tony Laithwaite

"Ever since I drove down to Bordeaux in 1969 to get my first wine shipment, I've kept the habit of always going straight to the source - the winemaker in his vineyard - for what my first customers used to call 'the real thing'. No middlemen … just lovingly crafted fine wines at way-down-to-earth prices.

What I call 'real' wine comes straight from the cellar door, has extra flavour, extra elements of pleasure, and somehow anyone, even a newcomer to wine, can feel its inherent quality and goodness. Laithwaites has never cut costs by buying the cheaper mass produced factory blends - never has and never will."

Now for a truly different musical evening at -

CADOGAN HALL

Tuesday 5 May, 2009 7.30pm

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain
The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, seen and heard across the globe, is simultaneously provocative, entertaining and inspiring. Their shows combine music, humour and intelligence with silliness. Using a menagerie of voices and cheap instruments, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain elicits emotion and thought in unexpected forms and successfully mix highbrow with lowbrow to appeal to an astonishingly broad audience: think Morecambe and Wise, explaining Joseph Beuys’ 'Desert Island Discs'. Wherever The Ukulele Orchestra performs, from Never Mind The Buzzcock’s Christmas Special, Jools Holland’s Hootenanny, to Blue Peter, to the smallest pub in England, they bring a hilarious style of music virtuoso that is all of their own.
