‘love london’ recycled

sculpture show at -

WWT London Wetland Centre

04/06/09 - 04/04/10

This year WWT London Wetland Centre will host the Love London Recycled Sculpture Show.

The 42 hectare London Wetland Centre is the best urban site in Europe to watch wildlife, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Silver Tourism Award winning visitor attraction.

This award recognised the centre for providing excellent habitats and refuges for a wide variety of wildlife. The site is home to 180 different bird species, supports a breeding colony of endangered water voles and is a haven for more than half of all UK dragonfly and damselfly species.

Crocodile by Gilbert Whyman

The Recycled Sculpture Show is an engaging and unique art exhibition. It communicates a positive message in support of sustainability, wildlife conservation and the protection of natural habitats.

Artists interpret and express these ecological themes through the medium of sculpture, utilising salvaged, reclaimed and recycled materials. This thought-provoking, entertaining and inspiring exhibition has captured the imagination of a worldwide audience.

The Recycled Sculpture Show also serves as the official media launch pad of the Love London ‘Green’ Festival (the largest sustainability festival in the World). Last year hosted at ZSL London Zoo. The Love London Festival is organised by London21 with support from the Mayor of London’s office.

The exhibits and environmental message attract an emotive response from the public which breaks language barriers, as was seen in last year’s ground-breaking show at ZSL London Zoo. Wide-spread press and media coverage as well as online blogging extended to the USA, Canada and Brazil to Russia and the Far East.

The next Built Environment networking breakfast will be held at The CBI Conference Centre in London's iconic Centre Point on Oxford Street.

These very popular breakfasts, held quarterly, are a unique chance for architects, developers, designers, infrastructure specialists, surveyors, estate agents, property solicitors, project managers, regeneration advisors and a range of other companies from within and around the Built Environment sector to network, exchange information and form important alliances for the future.

The special guest speaker is Martha Schwartz of Martha Schwartz Partners, the globally renowned and award-winning landscape architect.

Martha is also a member of the Mayor's Design for London Advisory Group and a Royal Institute of British Architects Honorary Fellow.

Her presentation will examine the issues faced by those committed to creating quality architecture in the public and private realms and the challenges faced by those designing dynamic and enjoyable public spaces, especially in London.

Before Martha's presentation, each attending company will have a chance to introduce themselves and their services to the rest of the audience. There will also be plenty of time for informal networking with the other attendees and a chance to discuss the issues raised by the presentation with Martha over breakfast and coffee.

Please note, it is expected that this event will be very popular and early booking is recommended. Members and non-members welcome.

The launch looms and we just had no idea. The inaugural meeting of Le Cafe
Anglais Scrabble club on Thursday 2nd July has already had a huge response.
We already have over fifty paid up contestants, some of whom are hunched
over their scrabble dictionaries learning all the two letter words beginning with X
and other arcane elements of the game. Less competitive players need not fear
as there is an Amateur Cup for those who play for the love of the language and
just plain fun.

£50.00 buys the entrance fee, a drink before the match, two
rounds of scrabble, followed by a two course dinner, followed by two more
rounds of scrabble for those still in the hunt. Plus there are prizes with
Champagne and £500.00 worth of vouchers to the winners and runners up.
There are still a few remaining places so book now with
nicky@lecafeanglais.co.uk. Spectators more than welcome

LE CAFÉ ANGLAIS

ROWLEY LEIGH, the chef proprietor of Le Café Anglais is one of the founding fathers of modern British cooking. After Cambridge University he tried his hand at farming and novel writing before falling into cooking 'almost by accident' in 1977. After a couple of years at the Joe Allen restaurant, he went to work with the Roux brothers at Le Gavroche in 1979. After stints at Le Gavroche, the brothers' pastry laboratory and becoming buyer for the group, he took over their prestigious Le Poulbot restaurant as head chef in 1984, receiving many accolades including the Times restaurant of the year award in 1986. He opened Kensington Place Restaurant with Nick Smallwood and Simon Slater in 1987. Quickly hailed by the Times as restaurant of the year, Kensington Place and its blend of brilliant food and an informal and buzzy atmosphere set the pattern for London restaurants in the 1990's. In the same decade, Rowley started a career as a cookery writer, winning the prestigious Glenfiddich award three times with The Guardian, The Sunday Telegraph and The Financial Times. He remains cookery correspondent of The Financial Times. His much accoladed book, No Place Like Home, was published in 2001. He left Kensington Place in December 2006 in order to open Le Café Anglais in 2007.

Joke Corner –

After this History Lesson – a salutary reminder – we might all take up Brocket Hall’s offer or possibly even mini golf a la Jonathan Ross !!

History Lesson (and there’s a moral to the story – read on)

In 1923 who was:

1. President of the largest steel company?
2. President of the largest gas company?
3. President of the New York stock Exchange?
4. Greatest wheat speculator?
5. President of the Bank of International Settlement?
6. Great Bear of Wall Street?

These men were considered to be some of the worlds’ most successful of

their day – now, 86 years later we are told that success had a price –

what ultimately became of them ????????????????

The Answers:

The president of the largest steel company. Charles Schwab - died a pauper.

2. The president of the largest gas company, Edward Hopson - went insane.

3. The president of the NYSE, Richard Whitney - was released from prison to die at home.

4. The greatest wheat speculator Arthur Cooger - died abroad, penniless.

5.. The president of the Bank of International Settlement - shot himself.

6 The Great Bear of Wall Street Cosabee Livermore - also committed suicide.
However, in that same year, 1923, the PGA Champion and the winner of the most important golf tournament - the US Open - was Gene Sarazen.

What became of him?

He played golf until he was 92, died in 1999 at the age of 95.

He was financially secure at the time of his death.

The moral of this history lesson:

Sod work !!
Play golf !!

and so say all of us !!!!!!!!

So working on the ‘less work’ basis – it is PARTY time !!

Street Party and Square Party

First Up –

the one and only – MOTCOMB STREET PARTY

an ‘institution’ in it’s own right -

Organised and run by members of the The Knightsbridge and Belgravia Business Association, the Motcomb Street Party now regularly attracts over 5,000 visitors and has proved to be the one of the most popular events in the local summer diary.

Year on year, the Street Party continues to demonstrate how local businesses really can generate extraordinary results. Last year, through the generous contributions of sponsors and donors, a staggering £32,000 was netted on behalf of the two very worthy children’s charities. This tremendous result was due in no small measure to the vital donations made by local companies and the revelling residents, visitors and VIPs who generously partake in the evening’s activities.

With live music sets, a DJ, street entertainers, delicious food and drink stalls and children’s activities, the event will be opened by a celebrity and include an auction of sumptuous prizes kindly donated by local traders and boutiques.

Currently we do not have complete details of this year’s celebrity participants – but going on previous years the evening’s activities should run as follows:

Date - 1st July 2009

5.45pm Street Party opens with disco

6.45pm Celebrity opening

7.30pm Auction

8.30pm Disco

Politics, politics, politics – whether or not you are totally disillusioned – the fact is politics effects our daily lives

THE BRUGES GROUP

presents

euro Vice
Wednesday, 17th June 2009 - 6.45pm for 7.00pm
How EU corruption, the euro and the Lisbon Treaty are putting the squeeze on Europe
Speakers:
Dr Anthony Coughlan - One of the Republic of Ireland's leading EU-critics

Edward Leigh MP - Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee

Dr ANTHONY COUGHLAN
Dr Anthony Coughlan, a Senior Lecturer Emeritus at Trinity College Dublin, is one of the Republic of Ireland's leading EU-critics. And is Director of The National Platform EU Research and Information Centre. This is a think-tank which produces documentation critical of closer European integration on democratic grounds for use by ‘No’ campaigners in the Republic's periodic European referendums.

He regards the growth of EU-critical opinion in the Republic of Ireland to be part of a growing international movement throughout Europe in defence of national democracy and the Nation State and subscribes to the dictum of the late President Charles De Gaulle that, "Europe is a Europe of the nations and the states or it is nothing."

Tony Coughlan was responsible for initiating the 1986/7 Crotty case before the Irish Supreme Court. This judgement laid down that a popular referendum was necessary before there could be a surrender of sovereignty to supranational European institutions, as the people are the repositories of sovereignty under the Irish Constitution, so only they can surrender it. It is because of this judgment that Ireland is required to hold a referendum on the Treaty of Lisbon before it can be ratified.

He is also involved in a number of cases before the Irish Supreme Court to try and ensure that the forthcoming Lisbon II referendum is fair and not distorted by the Irish Government.

EDWARD LEIGH MP
