Freedom and whisky gang thegither wrote Robert Burns over two hundred years ago. It's a sentiment we uphold.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society began life some twenty years ago when a group of friends clubbed together to buy a cask of fine malt whisky. It took a few years before they opened their doors wider and today the Society has three superb venues and over 20,000 members worldwide.
The Society remains true to its origins in camaraderie, retaining its personable and companionable atmosphere in its publications, events and premises. At the Society yours is the freedom to be yourself and make yourself at home.
The lunch will be in the Still Room on the 20th November and there will be a tasting before the lunch to give the guests a chance to sample two single cask, single malt whiskies. Jennifer the venues assistant manager will guide the group through how to 'appreciate' the whisky and get the most from it.

The innovative charity – PhotoVoice is holding a fundraising auction on the 4th November – hosted by Reuters with Guest Auctioneer –
Jeffrey Archer

Mission
PhotoVoice’s mission is to bring about positive social change for marginalised communities through providing them with photographic training with which they can advocate, express themselves and generate income.
PhotoVoice is an award-winning international charity and the only development organisation of its kind in Europe. Its projects empower some of the most disadvantaged groups in the world with photographic skills so that they can transform their lives. Through establishing in-field photo-journalism workshops its projects enable those who are traditionally the subjects of photography to become its creator. Through photography these individuals find confidence in their voices and are enabled to speak out about their challenges, concerns, hopes and fears.
PhotoVoice projects span four continents, assisting refugees, street children, orphans, HIV/ AIDS sufferers and special needs groups. Internationally the organisation provides the platform for PhotoVoice groups to exhibit and market their work and to inspire change. It also provides long-term support for individuals to pursue careers in their local photographic industries.

A little background on the origins of the dance -
AFRO-PERUVIAN DANCES

The slave trade did not only involve the Atlantic and Caribbean coasts; its horrific legacy touched nearly every corner of the Americas , including Perú, where it was practiced until 1845. Descendants of African slaves still live along Perú’s Pacific coast, and their music, rhythms and dances all trace their roots back to West Africa . When the Spanish sailed to the Americas in the early 1500s, the African slaves they brought with them became important contributors to the new music of Perú.

Andean Dances

The Aymara and the Quechua are two indigenous cultures still alive in the Andes . When performing traditional music and dance at ceremonial events it is considered an expression of solidarity, reaffirming common values and identity. Whether religious or secular, Huayno or Wayno is widely recognized as the most representative dance of the Andes . It may have originally been an Inca funeral dance, but today it is purely festive. Perhaps the most inspiring contribution of the Spanish invasion was the incredible music created by the fusion of native Peruvian flutes, African percussion and Spanish guitars.

Jazz – Rock – Funk – Jazz – Rock - Funk – Jazz – Rock
Just my type of music !!

Guerillasound are a trio of omnivorous genre modernists mixing jazz with rock, funk and whatever else they can deconstruct and then rebuild in the classic context of piano, double bass and drums. This makes every performance eclectic, as inspiration takes them from contemporary rock tunes to fragile acoustic ballads, from hard swinging bebop to biting funk backbeats.Featuring Nick Kaçal on double bass, Dave Ohm on drums and Grant Windsor on piano and rhodes, the members of Guerillasound created a trio that emphasises the art of the group. They love clean and acoustic but aren't afraid to be dirty and electric. They like emotion, but directed with intelligence.Or, to put it another, simpler way -Hip, melodic, groove orientated jazz blended with the deconstructed semiotics of rock, funk and other, more obscure styles...
Come and hear this wonderful mix of jazz – rock and funk

Avantgarde Opera with – Second Movement
Second Movement Reviewed by -
Opera Triple Bill: Michael Tanner
‘Second Movement is a young opera company which gives singers who have graduated from their college - but are not yet on the opera house circuit - a chance to demonstrate their gifts and in unusual repertoire. Since standards at Second Movement are evidently very high, it also gives enterprising opera goers, supposing they manage to spot one of the company’s rare and unobtrusive adverts, an opportunity to see things they might easily spend a lifetime without encountering.’
As we are privileged to receive Second Movement’s ‘rare and unobtrusive’ adverts – we take great pleasure on passing details of these very unusual events to You -
‘Second Movement is pleased to announce the dates of our American Triple Bill. The performance will run from Wednesday 22 October to Saturday 25 October 2008, at 7.30pm, at Hoxton Hall , 130 Hoxton Street, London N1 6SH.

The works have a common theme of suburban life in the United States. For our American Triple Bill, Second Movement has commissioned our first original work, an opera by two young US artists, composer Stefan Weisman and librettist David Cote, entitled Fade. The other two works are a revival of one of our most acclaimed productions, Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti, and a new production of Samuel Barber's A Hand of Bridge.

As part of Second Movements’ mission to make opera accessible to all ticket prices are low - £20 full price, and £15.00 for concessions. For more information and to book go to: http://www.secondmovement.org.uk/

Can YOU sabrage ?? OR as known to the cognoscenti - knocking a champagne cork out of a bottle with a Sword (Sabre)?
If you love champagne, have never attempted a sabrage – BUT would love to try – Come Join Us at the – Confrerie du Sabre d’Or Ball – icefire4sandra@aol.com
Firstly – just a little about the -

Welcome to the home of sabrage
The Confrérie du Sabre d'Or is devoted to promoting the act of Sabrage and the enjoyment of Champagne. The Heart of the Order is the growing number of Caveaux de Sabrage where Sabrage may be performed. The Caveaux range from small restaurants and Wine Bars to the grandest of Hotels. They all have two things in common - Champagne and fun. This is a wine and far too good to be left only to special occasions.

A programme of events throughout the year held at prestigious venues gives all our members and their guests excellent value for money and plenty of opportunity for Sabrage as well as enjoying excellent Champagne and food.

We welcome the opportunity of introducing you to the Confrérie and the fun of Sabrage.

Art of Sabrage
It can seem daunting when you are initially handed a sabre and a chilled bottle of Champagne with the expectation that you will sever the top of the bottle with the sword’s blade. Do not be downhearted! No-one has ever failed and all it needs is a firm wrist with a high elbow and you’ll be back at your table regaling your fellow guests with tales of how easy it really was.

When performed on a suitably chilled bottle of Champagne, the cork and glass annulus fly away, spilling little of the precious wine. The pressure of the Champagne always ensures that no glass falls back into the bottle. Today, the Maître-Sabreur is always there to make sure safety is observed, and the cork flies away from spectators.
