The 163rd Royal Caledonian Ball
Friday, 13th May 2011
Grosvenor House, Park Lane, London W1K 7TN

The Royal Caledonian Ball started sometime in the 1840s as a private gathering given by the Duke and Duchess of Atholl for their Scottish friends who resided in London. By 1849, still at their invitation, it became a subscription dance for the purposes of collecting funds for Scottish charities, albeit with a decidedly Highland bias. Records show that the ball has been held annually ever since; cancellations only occurring with events beyond the committee's control! No balls took place during the Boer War, following the death of Edward VII in 1910 and during the First and Second World Wars. Over more than one hundred and fifty years it has grown into one of the highlights of the London Season and a most successful vehicle for raising large sums of money. It must by now have a good chance of ranking as the oldest charity ball in the world.

Spectator Debate:

Secularism is a greater threat to Christianity than Islam

The Royal Geographical Society
London, SW7

Wednesday 29 June 2011

Event Description

Christianity may be under attack in Britain - but who are the aggressors? Britain’s Muslim population may be on the rise. But when women are banned from wearing a crucifix to work, or Christian teaching on sexuality is banned, is it the other faiths that are to blame? Or officials loyal to a civic religion? Our second debate asks if aggressive secularism has become the greatest enemy facing Britain’s Churches. Join the Spectator debate, chaired by Andrew Neil, on Wednesday 29 June at the Royal Geographical Society, London, SW7 between 6 pm and 8.30 pm.FOR the motion:• Professor Tariq Ramadan, Contemporary Islamic Studies, University of Oxford• Damian Thompson, Leader Writer, Daily Telegraph

January 2011 Issue

In Association with
Rendezvous – London

Hi Everybody,

Although we are only just into 2011- it is the editors’ prerogative to jump ahead a little and be thinking about an event in March !!

The event in question - The inaugural ‘Soldiering On’ Awards Ceremony 2011 to be held at the exclusive and glamorous Savoy Hotel - London.

Our vested interest? Ice & Fire are supporting and helping to organize this prestigious and very worthwhile event in conjunction with members of the Ministry of Defence.

Not only will the evening fundraise for the charity BLESMA – the British Limbless Ex-Servicemen’s Association but - and very importantly – we shall be honouring ex-members of the armed forces for their brave fighting spirit - not only in battle but by overcoming serious disabilities caused by the loss of a limb(s), and then going on to contribute to society.

Naturally, we are giving details below and I can only say that I do hope you will join me for what should be a very memorable occasion.

My best wishes,
Sandra
