On to Opera with a twist –
Ensemble Serse

Ensemble Serse
Ensemble Serse is a period band of young international musicians founded by male soprano Calvin Wells. Their aim is to provide a platform to showcase young talent as well as to present neglected dramatic works from the 18th century in historically informed productions. All of the performances are on period instruments.
The inspiration behind the ensemble is the stunning operatic virtuosity of the early eighteenth century, a virtuosity that envelops a wealth of unjustly neglected works; musical gems that have for too long been left to gather dust on library shelves.
The next production is -

Joke Corner – some fabulous ‘gems’ here
Steven Wright

If you're not familiar with the work of Steven Wright he's the famously erudite comic who once said: "I woke up one morning and all of my stuff had been stolen and replaced by exact duplicates."His mind sees things differently than most of us do, to our amazement and amusement. Here are some of his gems:
1 - I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.
2 - Borrow money from pessimists -- They don't expect it back.
3 - Half the people you know are below average.
4 - 99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name.
5 - 82.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
6 - A conscience is what hurts when all your other parts feel so good.
7 - A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.
8 - If you want the rainbow, you got to put up with the rain.
9 - All those who believe in psycho-kinesis raise my hand.
10 - The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.
11 - I almost had a psychic girlfriend...but she left me before we met.
12 - OK, so what's the speed of dark?
13 - How do you tell when you're out of invisible ink?
14 - If everything seems to be going well you have obviously overlooked something.
15 - Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.
16 - When everything is coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.
17 - Ambition is a poor excuse for not having enough sense to be lazy.
18 - Hard work pays off in the future, laziness pays off now.
19 - I intend to live forever...so far, so good.
20 - If Barbie is so popular, why do you have to buy her friends?
21 - Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.
22 - What happens if you get scared half to death twice?
23 - My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."
24 - Why do psychics have to ask you for your name?
25 - If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.
26 - A conclusion is the place where you got tired of thinking.
27 - Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
28 - The hardness of the butter is proportional to the softness of the bread.
29 - To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research.
30 - The problem with the gene pool is that there is no lifeguard.
31 - The sooner you fall behind, the more time you'll have to catch up.
32 - The colder the X-ray table, the more of your body is required to be on it.
33 - Everyone has a photographic memory; some just don't have film.
34 - If your car could travel at the speed of light, would your headlights work?

QUEEN’S ELM GALLERY GOES WILD AGAIN . . .
FOR CHRISTIAN THE LION
15-18 OCTOBER 2009

QUEEN’S ELM – OPEN EVENING
241 FULHAM ROAD CHELSEA SW3
16 OCTOBER 2009
6.00 pm
Celebrity supporters will be joining John Rendall and the Art of Giving for the launch of the new Christian the Lion book. John will be sharing his wonderful experiences with Christian combined with an art gallery event, being supported by a wealth of amazing artists generously donating a percentage of sales of their work to George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust and the Born Free Foundation

Art of Giving was created by Ben and Tracey Bambrough who wanted to channel their passion for art and a desire to really make a difference, into a worthwhile and sustainable project. The company will be launched at the V&A in June 2010. However, a chance meeting with Simon Tarrant of the wonderful Queen’s Elm gallery, a conversation with Born Free and consequent meeting with John Rendall, created a pre-launch opportunity which was too good to miss . . . to bring ‘Christian the Lion’ back to London and celebrate his life - just a stone’s throw away from where he lived in the Kings Road.

The book shares the heart-warming and true story of Christian. The lion cub bought from Harrods by John Rendall and Anthony (Ace) Bourke, raised in their Chelsea flat and finally returned to live wild and free on the African plains with the help of Virginia McKenna, Bill Travers and George Adamson. Christian’s story is told in scrapbook style, using original photographs* of him as a cub. These images are both funny, moving and heart warming. The simple and accessible text, told in Christian’s voice, deals with themes familiar to little ones - love friendship, play and exploration.

The story and film of Christian the Lion has been shown around the world and has captured everyone’s hearts. John and Ace’s meeting with him in the wild was the most watched clip in 2008 with over 44 million hits on You Tube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjWtRYaxmWM

Christian, in this celebration of his life, is being an ambassador for those wonderful animals now so critically reduced in numbers due to human population growth, habitat loss, trophy hunting and depletion. GAWPT and the Born Free Foundation are doing everything in their power to raise awareness, to educate the world on how to save the lives of wild animals, stop suffering rescue individuals and protect rare species, but the cost of doing this relies heavily on support and donations to enable this to be achieved.

For more information on this event, please contact info@artofgiving.co.uk

Christian the Lion books can be purchased at the event or via the GAWPT website http://www.georgeadamson.org/ and the Christian the Lion DVD can be purchased via the Born Free Foundation website http://www.bornfree.org.uk/

ANIMAL CONSERVATION FACTS
40 years ago, there were 200K lions in the world today there are only 30K – in Kenya 40 years ago, there were 30K lions, there are now only 2K. At this rate, lions could be extinct in just years.

ART OF GIVING
Ben Bambrough [07980 310468] runs his own successful Central London based interior design business. Tracey Bambrough [07834 282524]created the idea and they are both key in driving this initiative. Art of Giving will be website based – with various gallery events throughout the year. For more information: info@artofgiving.co.uk

QUEEN’S ELM GALLERY
Simon Tarrant [07711 335350] runs the Queen’s Elm Gallery with Toin Adams and Nicholas Ellis – see links below for more information.

Queen’s Elm used to be a hip swinging 60s/70s bar – where Laurie Lee used to play his tin whistle there and Francis Bacon propped up the bar. The upstairs bar used to be an art gallery, where artists such as Norman Stevens, Liz Frink, to name only two and numerous graduates from the Royal College of Art held exhibitions. So with a long overdue resurrection, Queen’s Elm in Chelsea hasn’t buzzed like it has recently, since its hayday - not as a 1960s drinking hole, but as a white-washed art gallery .

Now a little about the charity – ‘Help for Heroes’

Help for Heroes (H4H) was founded by Bryn and Emma Parry after a profoundly moving visit to Selly Oak Hospital in the summer of 2007. Bryn and Emma met some extraordinarily brave young people who had been badly wounded and they just wanted to so something to help.

The charity was launched in October 2007 and, with the backing and support of Celebrities, including Jeremy and Francie Clarkson, The Royal Family, The Media and countless ordinary decent people, it has raised over £1million a month since then.

The message is simple: H4H does not seek to criticise or be political, it simply wants to help and to do so by asking everyone to do their bit to raise money. Once that money is raised, the charity goes to the experts in the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force for guidance as to how best to spend it.

Joke Corner – Priceless –

It is the month of August, on the shores of the black Sea. It is raining,
and the little town looks totally deserted. It is tough times, everybody
is in debt, and everybody lives on credit.

Suddenly, a rich tourist comes to town.

He enters the only hotel, lays a 100 Euro note on the reception counter
and goes to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to pick one.

The hotel proprietor takes the 100 Euro note and runs to pay his debt to
the butcher.

The Butcher takes the 100 Euro note, and runs to pay his debt to the pig
grower.

The pig grower takes the 100 Euro note, and runs to pay his debt to the
supplier of his feed and fuel.

The supplier of feed and fuel takes the 100 Euro note and runs to pay his
debt to the town's prostitute that in these hard times, gave her
'services' on credit.

The hooker runs to the hotel, and pays off her debt with the 100 Euro note
to the hotel proprietor to pay for the rooms that she rented when she
brought her clients there.

The hotel proprietor then lays the 100 Euro note back on the counter so
that the rich tourist will not suspect anything.

At that moment, the rich tourist comes down after inspecting the rooms
and takes his 100 Euro note, after saying that he did not like any of the
rooms, and leaves town.

No one earned anything. However, the whole town is now without debt, and
looks to the future with a lot of optimism.

Financial shenanigans – all mirrors, smoke and illusion then comes ‘payback’ time

Joke Cornerwith record GCSE’s announced and return to school just round the corner we thought we would give a new take on maths !!!
1. Teaching maths in 1970
A logger sells a truckload of timber for £100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?
2. Teaching Maths In 1980
A logger sells a truckload of timber for £100. His cost of production is 80% of the price. What is his profit?
3. Teaching Maths In 1990
A logger sells a truckload of timber for £100. His cost of production is £80. How much was his profit?
4. Teaching Maths In 2000
A logger sells a truckload of timber for £100. His cost of production is £80 and his profit is £20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.
5. Teaching Maths In 2005
A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habit of animals or the preservationof our woodlands. Your assignment: Discuss how the birds and squirrels might feel as the logger cut down their homes just for a measly profit of £20.
6. Teaching Maths In 2009
A logger is arrested for trying to cut down a tree in case it may be offensive to Muslims or other religious groups not consulted in the felling licence.
He is also fined a £100 as his chainsaw is in breach of Health and Safety legislation as it deemed too dangerous and could cut something. He has used the chainsaw for over 20 years without incident however he does not have the correct certificate of competence and is therefore considered to be a recidivist and habitual criminal. His DNA is sampled and his details circulated throughout all government agencies. He protests and is taken to court and fined another £100 because he is such an easy target.
When he is released he returns to find Gypsies have cut down half his wood to build a camp on his land. He tries to throw them off but is arrested, prosecuted for harassing an ethnic minority, imprisoned and fined a further £100.
While he is in jail the Gypsies cut down the rest of his wood and sell it on the black market for £100 cash. They also have a leaving BBQ of squirreland pheasant and depart leaving behind several tonnes of rubbish and asbestos sheeting. The forester on release is warned that failure to clear the fly tipped rubbish immediately at his own cost is an offence.
He complains and is arrested for environmental pollution, breach of the peace and invoiced £12,000 plus VAT for safe disposal costs by a regulated government contractor.Your assignment: How many times is the logger going to have to be arrested and fined before he realises that he is never going to make £20 profit by hard work, give up, sign onto the dole and live off the state for the rest of his life?
7. Teaching Maths In 2010
A logger doesn’t sell a lorry load of timber because he can’t get a loan to buy a new lorry because his bank has spent all his and their money on aderivative of securitised debt related to sub- prime mortgages in Alabamaand lost the lot with only some government money left to pay a few million pound bonuses to their senior directors and the traders who made the biggest losses. The logger struggles to pay the £1,200 road tax on his old lorry however, as it was built in the 1970s it no longer meets the emissions regulations and he is forced to scrap it. Some Bulgarian loggers buy the lorry from the scrap merchant and put it back on the road. They undercut everyone on price for haulage and send their cash back home, while claiming unemployment for themselves and their relatives. If questioned they speak no English and it is easier to deport them at the governments expense.
Following their holiday back home they return to the UK with different names and fresh girls and start again. The logger protests, is accused of being a bigoted racist and as his name is on the side of his old lorry he is forced to pay £1,500 registration fees as a gangmaster. The Government borrows more money to pay more to the bankers as bonus's are not cheap. The parliamentarians feel they are missing out and claim the difference on expenses and allowances. You do the maths.

About us
Marie Curie Cancer Care is one of the UK’s largest charities. It was established in 1948 – the same year as the NHS.
Employing more than 2,700 nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals, we expect to provide care to around 25,000 terminally ill patients in the community and in our hospices this year, along with support for their families.
We mainly care for people with cancer but we also care for people with other life limiting illnesses. Our services are always free of charge to patients and their families.
The charity is best known for its network of Marie Curie Nurses working in the community to provide end-of-life care for patients in their own homes.
We have nine hospices across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and two centres for palliative care research. We also run the world-renowned Marie Curie Research Institute, which investigates the causes and treatments of cancer.
Financially, around 70 per cent of the charity’s income comes from the generous support of thousands of individuals, membership organisations and businesses, with the balance of our funds coming from the NHS.
We also depend on an army of volunteers to support our work in both care and fundraising.
The daffodil is the emblem of Marie Curie Cancer Care. Every March we run the Great Daffodil Appeal, with street collections and other fundraising events nationwide.

104th Chelsea Fair

23 – 27 September 2009

Chelsea Antiques Fair enjoys a Boutique style, of intimate elegance in the fine Old Town Hall, built in 1906 in vaguely 17th Century style. Small and relaxed, the 35+ exhibitors are delighted to chat with visitors, impart their knowledge and discuss collecting in all its forms.Standards are high, and Vetting plays a significant part in maintaining quality, authenticity and correct informative labels. Chelsea enjoys a higher level of vetting than at other Penman Fairs and most of the exhibitors are members of BADA and / or LAPADA.Returning to the Calendar after a year's sabbatical, this refreshed September event offers a wide variety of antiques and works of art, from furniture to jewellery, glass to porcelain - all of high quality and carefully vetted for authenticity.Since the demise of the Grosvenor House Antiques Fair, the Chelsea Fair is now the oldest Fair in Britain, and possibly the World! Chelsea was established in 1950, and from 1951 to 1984 was run by Josephine Graham Ballin, establishing its fine reputation across the globe, and especially in the United States.
