‘Artists of wine: Worlds stars of tomorrow’

For a great artist, his art is always a statement with a personal stamp that a creator puts on his work. Facing a myriad of choices, an artist constantly searches for the balance between the controlling and creative forces. A balance which even great winemakers search for. Just as a painter creates a painting so does a great winemaker create a wine using a whole palette of winemaking variables to satisfy our senses. Who are these modern wine geniuses? That’s what our tasting ‘Artists of wine: Worlds stars of tomorrow” is all about. During the evening we will enjoy the creations of some of the most adventurous and imaginative winemakers from the Old and New World. We are delighted to present this project in partnership with Pure Evil Gallery (www.pureevil.eu) and GalleryNosco (http://www.gallerynosco.com/). Thanks to them we will not only fill our glasses with great wine but also fill our eyes with great art.

When:15th of AprilTime: 7.30-9.30Where: 1-5 Exhibition Road, South Kensington, SW7 2 HE
Price: 30 GDP on the door or 25 GDP if you pay by 10 April (for the details of booking and payment please e-mail - redandwhitewineclub@gmail.com

The tasting will be hosted by Alya Kharchenko, a journalist who after receiving qualifications from the London Wine and Spirit Educational Trustand School of Sommelier in Moscow, gained experience in the wine trade and has organised many tutored wine tastings.

Art with a difference – this event explores a very difficult subject – female circumcision – a very different form of sexual abuse -

The London Original Print Fair presents - A Graphic Conversation - Paula Rego in conversation with Marco LivingstoneThe Royal Academy of Arts, The Reynolds Room, Wednesday 22 April, 7pm, Limited seats available. In the run-up to the opening of the Paula Rego Museum in Portugal, the celebrated artist discusses her new work on female circumcision with art historian Marco Livingstone.Paula Rego’s new works, based on the controversial subject of female circumcision, will be launched by Marlborough Graphics at the London Original Print Fair 09. Rego established an early reputation with her surreal collages, later populated with subversive cartoon-like animals. In 1988, a retrospective at the Serpentine Gallery in London confirmed her international reputation. A powerful original female voice, she is now one of Europe's most sought after artists. A painter of 'stories', her characters enact a variety of roles and depict disquieting tensions below the surface. The Paula Rego museum, designed by architect Souto de Moura, is planned to open this September in Cascais, Portugal. Rego will be donating to the appropriately named building, House of Stories, a complete set of her prints together with her collection of paintings and drawings by Victor Willing. Marco Livingstone has written about Paula Rego's work on a number of occasions and was the curator of her comprehensive 2007 retrospective at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. His monograph on Peter Blake, 'Peter Blake: one man show', will be published by Lund Humphries in May, and is currently writing a book on the painter Peter Kinley.Tickets: £10 (plus £1.50 transaction fee) includes entry to the Print Fair (special late opening until 7pm) and the LOPF catalogue *Please note lines will be open for bookings from Wednesday 8 AprilBooking essential on 0844 209 1866 or www.keithprowse.com Tickets cannot not be bought or made refundable at the Royal Academy of Arts ticket deskPress information: Contact Julia Huff at Theresa Simon & Partners -T. 020 7734 4800 E. julia@theresasimon.com - Venue information: Royal Academy of Arts, The Reynolds Room, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London W1J 0BD.

So to a drop or two of the fizzy stuff – popping corks everywhere !!!

CONFRERIE du SABRE d’OR

The Champagne club that's a cut above all other champagne clubs

The Confrérie du Sabre d'Or is devoted to promoting the act of Sabrage and the enjoyment of Champagne. The Heart of the Order is the growing number of Caveaux de Sabrage where Sabrage may be performed. The Caveaux range from small restaurants and Wine Bars to the grandest of Hotels. They all have two things in common - Champagne and fun. This is a wine and far too good to be left only to special occasions.

A programme of events throughout the year held at prestigious venues gives all our members and their guests excellent value for money and plenty of opportunity for Sabrage as well as enjoying excellent Champagne and food.

We welcome the opportunity of introducing you to the Confrérie and the fun of Sabrage.

Art of Sabrage

It can seem daunting when you are initially handed a sabre and a chilled bottle of Champagne with the expectation that you will sever the top of the bottle with the sword’s blade. Do not be downhearted! No-one has ever failed and all it needs is a firm wrist with a high elbow and you’ll be back at your table regaling your fellow guests with tales of how easy it really was.

When performed on a suitably chilled bottle of Champagne, the cork and glass annulus fly away, spilling little of the precious wine. The pressure of the Champagne always ensures that no glass falls back into the bottle. Today, the Maître-Sabreur is always there to make sure safety is observed, and the cork flies away from spectators.

So if you would like to try your hand - contact Julian White on - 020 7917 1000

i) Facts to Blow our Minds –
Sony played this video at their executive conference this year – watch and learn -

ii) USA – 4 / France – 0
I haven’t checked whether these are true, and, although I am far from being an advocate of all things American these are lovely put downs – Vive Entente cordiale !!! – with apologies to any French readers !!!
Colin Powell, keynote speaker at a fairly large conference in England during the early days of the Iraq war, was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if the US plans for Iraq were just an example of ‘empire building’ by George Bush. He answered by saying, ‘Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return.’ You could have heard a pin drop.
Then there was a conference in France in late Dec 2004 where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break one of the French engineers came back into the room saying ‘Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intend to do, bomb them?’ You could have heard a pin drop...........then................an American engineer stood up and replied quietly: ‘Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electric power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day; and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck... We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?’You could have heard a pin drop.
And just two more.............
A US Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included admirals from the US, English, Canadian, Australian, and French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks, but a French admiral suddenly complained that, ‘whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English.’ He then asked, ‘Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?’ Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied ‘Maybe it’s because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you wouldn’t have to speak German.
You could have heard a pin drop. And finally........................... A group of Americans, retired teachers, recently went to France on a tour. Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane. At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his bag. ’You have been to France before, monsieur?’ the customs officer asked sarcastically. Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously. ’Then you should know enough to have your passport ready.’ The American said, ‘The last time I was here, I didn’t have to show it.’ ’Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports on arrival in France!’ The American senior citizen gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained, ‘Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in ‘44 to help liberate this country, I couldn’t find any damn Frenchmen to show it to.’You could have heard a pin drop.

I guess that’s USA 4 – France 0 !!!
